Things are moving fast at the Australian Open, today the 3rd round will begin, so it’s time for some seeded players to start facing each other. There are a lot of great matches scheduled ( here the order of play)one of the most intriguing is the one between Samantha Stosur and Ana Ivanovic.
Stosur is actually at the 17th spot in wta single ranking, she won two titles last year, in Carlsbad and Osaka and she reached two other finals in Sofia and Moscow getting defeated by Simona Halep in both tournaments. She lost to Klara Zakopalova in the semifinals of Hobart tournament just the week before the Australian Open. Stosur has won one Grand Slam title, at the Us Open 2011, but she has never been lucky during the Australian Open having the 4th round as best results in her home Slam. Tonight she’ll have the support of the always hot australian crowd while she’ll keep chasing the dream to be the first aussie to win in Australia since Christine O’Neil in 1978.
On the opposite baseline there will be Ana Ivanovic (14th) who has had a great start in this new season, winning in Auckland in the first week of the year, the first tournament after almost 3 years . 2013 was a bad season for Ivanovic, she reached one final in Linz and lost 6-4 7-6(6) to Angelique Kerber. Last year in Australia Ivanovic lost in the 4th round against the future champion Vika Azarenka, but her best memory about Melbourne is the final played against Maria Sharapova in 2008, she lost that match, but that season were magic for her, she won at Indian Wells and few weeks later she took her first Grand Slam title at Roland Garros.
Stosur and Ivanovic played each other seven times so far, and Samantha lead 4-3. Two of this seven matches were last year, Stosur won 7-5 6-4 in Moscow and Ivanovic won in Sofia 6-2 5-7 6-2.
The first match between them? Australian Open 2006, second round. Samantha Stosur won that match 6-3 7-5, today, eight years later Sam will try to score a second win on australian’s soil, while Ana will claim her revenge.
