Today in Dubai semifinals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will cash, for another chapter of one great rivalry that started eight years ago.
The first meeting between them was in Montecarlo, in 2006, at the first round. At that time Roger Federer was the world n.1 and Novak Djokovic was just a young talented guy, who was making his way in the world of tennis, he was ranked 67.
Federer won that match 6-2, 2-6, 6-3, and then advanced all the way up to the final where he lost to Rafael Nadal.
Djokovic lost all the first four meetings against Federer, including the first clash in a Grand Slam tournament, which was during the 2007 Australian Open, in the 4th round, Federer was still leading the ranking while Djokovic climbed until the 15th place.
Later that year Djokovic won his first match against Federer, in the ATP Master Series in Montreal, Canada. They met in the final, Djokovic was already the world n.4 and won 7-6(2), 2-6, 7-6(2).
Federer has a four games winning streak record, he has won the first four meeting ever, twice in 2006 (Montecarlo and Davis Cup), and twice in 2007 (Australian Open and Dubai).
Djokovic has a winning streak record of three, but he was be able to set it for three times:
- Australian Open, Dubai and Indian Wells 2011
- US Open 2011, Rome and Roland Garros 2012
- ATP World Tour Finals 2012, Paris and ATP World Tour Finals 2013
Federer leads the head to head series 16-15, but Djokovic prevailed in the last three and in seven of the last ten meetings. During their careers they have played each other in eight finals winning four each one.
