The Miami Open 2014 is just started, waiting to see who will raise the trophy let’s refresh our memory about what happened last year
Women: Serena Williams d Maria Sharapova 4-6, 6-3, 6-0
Men: Andy Murray d David Ferrer
Nothing changed in the top 10 of the Atp ranking this week:
|5||Juan Martin Del Potro||4960|
In the Wta ranking this last week brought a little more of shuffling in the low half of the top ten. Simona Halep and Angeliqe Kerber both gained two spots while Jelena Jankovic dropped one and Petra Kvitova lost three.
Venus Williams has won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship defeating Alize Cornet 6-3, 6-0. It’s the first success for the older of Williams sister since the triumph in Luxemburg in October 2012. Venus started this tournament as n.44 in WTA ranking, and thanks to this title she will climb the ranking until n.29, returning in the top 30 for the first time since May 19th 2013. It’s the third crown for Venus in Dubai, she won the tournament in 2009, 2010 and 2014. She’s now one win behind to Justine Henin who has won four times (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007)
Venus is out from the top 20 since March 31st 2013, and in the last two seasons her best result in a Grand Slam tournament is the third round, reached in Australia in the 2013. But if you’re Venus Williams one tournament crown is enough to get asked about the chance to win a Grand Slam again:
“Winning all those Grand Slam titles, playing deep and getting to the final so many times, those are amazing accomplishments. It takes a lot of nerve and mental prowess. I’d like to think I’m on that path. But I’m not looking to do anything I did in the past, because I already did that. I’m looking to improve and be a better, smarter Venus. This week is obviously a step – every week for me is a step.” Williams said.
Alize Cornet lost her 4th straight match against the former n.1 Venus Williams, she lost in the first round of Roland Garros in 2007, in the third round in Dubai 2009, and in the second round of the Australian Open last year. Cornet will gain three position in the ranking, and the next week she will be n.23, which is her best result since June 9th 2013.
Serena Williams and Jelena Jankovic went both through the second round in Dubai, and they will clash in quarterfinals. In second round matches, Serena won 7-6(8), 6-0 against the world n.24 Ekaterina Makarova, and Jelena Jankovic beat Lucie Safarova 7-5, 6-4. Continue Reading
